The better version of Partick Graland's film

Patrick Garland’s film did the best job of portraying Nora, because he makes Nora seem childish, silly and dependent to Torvald as she is in the original play. In the book A Doll’s house wrote by Henrik Ibsen is about the people in 19th century, Patrick Garland is setting up the old fashion splendid dressing and the is house decorate with beautiful old fashion style to make the film more likely in 19th century. In addition, that the background music shows that the play is occur in the Christmas time and he captures the snow outside the house. Those scenes are really portraying the period of 19th century. However, Patrick Garland chooses the actor Anthony Hopkins as Torvald is older than the actor Claire Bloom as Nora, because that can strongly express to show that the actor of Nora is dependent on her husband Torvald. In another hand that, young women are always use their beauty to attract another people to do or give something that they want to. In page 5, also in the film when Torvald asks to give Nora a Christmas present for her, and he says “yes, but you must. Tell me something reasonable that you would particularly like to have.” Then the actor of Nora in the Film going toward and hugging the actor of Torvald, and without raising her eyes to his, in the same page of 5 Nora says” If you really want to give me something, you might-you-might-. You might give me money, Torvald. Only just as much as you afford; and then one of these days I will buy something with it.” In the book, Nora is always using her beauty to make her husband to pay more attention to her and get more benefit to herself; of course, the only thing she wants is money.

The author Henrik Ibsen, he wants to write about the mode of marriage in 19th century, in fact to show that the discrimination of the women. In that time of period, women cannot go to work except for the widowed women who husband has died. In addition, women have no power and they do not have the right to vote, only men can support their family. For incidence, in the film and in the book, Torvald is always treats Nora as a silly, childish woman. He calls his wife as a little squirrel or little lark twittering. In the page 3 and 4 Torvald calling his wife” Is that my little lark twittering out here?” and “when did my squirrel come home?” also in the film Anthony Hopkins is getting out the money from his pocket and using the money as pet foods to fooling or playing with his wife Nora as a pet. Claire Bloom did a great job in this scene, because she was exactly portraying the characteristic of Nora when she turns around and see the money then she quickly cling to Torvald’s body and counting the money, that Torvald gives her. This is to show that Nora is a greedy person in her first appearance of the readers and subscribers.

In my opinion, Nora is not that bad as we think. Mrs. Linde thinks that Nora an incapable of anything, but Nora show that it is not truth, in the page 14 when Nora is having a conversation with Mrs. Linde and she says “well, then I have found other ways of earning money. Last winter I was lucky enough to get a lot of coping to do; so I locked myself up and sat writing every evening until quite late at night…it was like being a man.” Nora learns to take pride in her ability to earn money as “if she were a man.” In addition, she borrows money from a disgraced lawyer to save her husband’s life by forging her father’s signature of surety on the bond. However, she will never tell those things to her husband, because she thinks that will damage her husband’s dignity. In addition, women cannot borrow money from the bank without any male’s surety, but in that time her father is about to end his life and her husband is very sick. Therefore, she has no choice except to forge her father’s signature to help his husband. Nora is a very brave woman; even tough many people are saying that she is a very spendthrift, silly and childish woman. In the same way, that Claire Bloom acts in the film is to show that women cannot be a smart people in that time of period even though they are smart. The reason that Claire Bloom acts like a frivolous child-wife to his husband is that she wants to keep her husband’s dignity and hide her ability for the benefit of her husband.

In conclusion, Patrick Garland’s film is the best interpretation of Nora because he chooses the best actor to do the character of Nora. Claire Bloom did an excellent job on Nora’s characteristic; she represents the best performance than the film of George Schaefer did.

Characterization of Nora or in Act 1 of A Doll's House

Nora is a person that likes to waste her husband’s money to buying some sort of useless things and she seems like her husband‘s money more then her husband. In addition, I think she always act likes a young woman to attract her husband or some other guys to get more advantage. When she was little, she’s spendthrift is already appeared, as we can read on page 9, Mrs. Linde says “In our schooldays you were a great spendthrift.” In the other hand, that her husband Torvald says they need to economies her control of spending money. After then she replies an excuse to her husband on page 4 “This is the first Christmas that we have not needed to economies.” I think that is an excuse to spend more money. In generally that I think Nora doesn’t go to work before, she doesn’t really know how hard is the money to get it from, she thinks that money is very easy to earn or maybe she is born in a wealthy family, so that’s why she always spend money to buy some other thing. On the page 4 Torvald says, “That I borrowed fifty pounds to-day, and you spent it all in the Christmas week, and then on New Year’s Eve a slate fell on my head and killed me.” In the quote, we can also know that when the money is in charge by her hands, she will quickly to spend it all the money to buy her stuffs. Therefore, my suggestion is to keep all her money to her husband’s bank account. Whenever she needs money, she has to ask her husband and put a limit in everyday she spends.
